Samuel and Jane Currey

Samuel Currey and Jane Currey were born before 1710 in Northern Ireland. They sailed from Belfast in 1729 and landed at Boston, Massachusetts. From Boston they went to Chester County, Pennsylvania, and lived there until their deaths. Samuel died April 21, 1758. They had three sons

Samuel Currey, the oldest of the brothers, is believed to have moved to South Carolina.

Ezekiel Currey (1735) married Elizabeth Brownlee (Dec 6.1759) in Delaware at the Old Sweden Church. Moved to North Carolina and eventually to Nolensville, Tennessee, where he is buried.

Samuel Currey (1761- )

Ezekiel Currey (1762-1851) was a Presbyterian Minister in Cherokee, North Carolina. He is mentioned in several histories of the churches in North Carolina. He lived to be 92 years old. He married Elizabeth Allen in 1800. They had four daughters.

Robert Brownlee Currey: (Feb 2, 1774- ) Moved to Nashville in 1795.Married Jane Grey Owen (1811) in Nashville, Died Dec 12, 1848, Jane Grey was born Feb 4, 1792 in Indiana to Richard Brown Owen and Susan Edwards. She died in 1867.

BROWNLEE

Elizabeth Brownlee married Ezekiel Currey in 1759. We have no record of Elizabeth’s family although we believe that her son Robert Brownlee Currey was named after his maternal grandfather. There were Brownlees (also spelled Brownley and Brimley) in Scotland in Torfoot, Lanarkshire. There are further records of Brownlees in Northern Ireland around Belfast. It was from Belfast that a number of them came to the colonies to escape religious and ethnic persecution. A number went south to Charleston. Like the Currey family, they were Scotch- Irish or Ulster Scots and Presbyterians. Most of the American Scots married other Scots because they spoke the same dialects and went to the same church and were used to the hard life of the Scotch immigrants, starting from scratch, often in hostile territory.

Jane Grey Owen married Robert Brownlee Currey.

The Owen Genealogy follows:

Howell Ap Goronwy was born in Dafarn Goch, LLanfairmathafarneithaf, Wales. His son was named William Ap Howell Ap Goronwy and his grandson was Goronwy Ap William Ap Howel Ap Goronwy. (The Ap stands for “son of” and to include the line of descendants, you took the names of all your line. The family has been traced either correctly or incorrectly to about 1100 in Wales.)

Owen Goronwy I and his son Goronwy Owen II were the next in line with the younger Owen marrying Margaret Humphreys of Llanallgo, Anglesey, Wales.

Mary Tennessee Eastman married John Henry Currey May 27 1860 in Knoxville, Tennessee. The Eastman Genealogy follows:

John Eastman (1515-1565) in Downton, England. The name was also spelled Easman, Estman, Estmann. His sons were Roger and William.

Roger Eastman, his first son (1539-1604) His sons were Nicholas, John, and William.

Nicholas Eastman (1564-1640) in Downton, married Ann Barbara Rooke (1581-1625). They had Thomas, John, Margaret, Roger, Nicholas, Maurice, William, Alexander, and Christiana.

Roger Eastman (1610-1694) Married Sarah Smith (1621-1697) from Wales in Salisbury, Massachusetts. Roger sailed from Southampton, England on the ship Confidence on April 11, 1638. They had the following children: John, Nathaniel, Philip, Timothy, Thomas, Joseph, Benjamin, Sarah, Samuel, and Ruth.

Philip Eastman (1644-1714) married Mary Morse or Barnard.

Ebenezer Eastman (1681- ?) married Sarah Peaslee or Peasley in 1710. He was a Captain in Col Wainwright’s force that fought at Port Royal. He was a farmer in Massachusetts.

Nathaniel Eastman (1717-?) married Phoebe Chandler. He fought at Ticonderoga in 1777 and lived in Concord, Mass.

Nathaniel Eastman II (1755- 1839) married Ruth Bradley. He was also at Ticonderoga in 1777.

Timothy Eastman (1786- ?) married Abigail Wilkins 1, and Ms Underwood 2. He was a postmaster.

Elbridge Gerry Eastman (1813- 1859) in Bridgewater, New Hampshire married Lucy Carr from New York (1813-?) in Baltimore in 1838. He was a Major in Army, a printer, a newspaper publisher and politician. He is buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Nashville, Tn.

Amanda Tennessee Gower married Benjamin Turbeville on Jan 8, 1857 in Nashville.

Her family was among the original settlers of Nashville and the history of the family is long and expansive.

Amanda was the daughter of Lorenzo Dow Gower b. Mar 7, 1803 and Nancy Lucas Gatlin b. 1805. She was one of sixteen children, all born in Nashville.

Lorenzo Dow Gower was the son of William E. Gower b. Nov 6 1776 in North Carolina and Charlotte Garland b. Jul 1, 1782. He was the oldest son of sixteen children.

William E. Gower was the son of Abel Gower Jr,. b. 1730-1735 in Virginia and Obedience Blakely, b. 1740.,

Abel Gower Sr. was married to Mary Robertson b. 1722 in Virginia (sister of James Robertson) Abel Sr. and Abel Jr. were killed by Indians at Clover Bottom in Nashville Nov.10, 1780

William Rolles (Rawle) b. about 1650. This gentleman was the first of the Rawls’ line in the New World. He originally came from England where the Rawls name dates back to Anglo-Saxon tribal days. The name is a place name from the village of Raleigh in the county of Devonshire. The Old English name was ra leah or meadow for deer. Devon is located in southwest England. south of Wales. The name is spelled several ways: Raleigh, Rawley, Rawleigh, Rawle, Rawles, Ralls, as well as other ways. He probably settled in Virginia. His son was :

Shadrach was a private in the Revolutionary War in North Carolina Militia and a lieutenant in the Tennessee Militia in 1798.

He was born in North Carolina in 1760, moved to South Carolina in 1790-1798, and moved to Robertson County, Tennessee in 1798. He is buried in Mt. Sharon Cemetery in an unmarked grave.

He is one of the founders of Mt.Sharon Cumberland Presbyterian Church

James A. Yeargin was a Confederate soldier who was wounded at the Battle of Murfreesboro in 1864 and because of his wounds was paroled by Governor Andrew Johnson. His wife Louise was the daughter of John B. Minor and Louisa Bolling Carter. The Minors claimed to be descendants of Pocahontas

They had eleven children , John died 4-28-1677.

Robert Hill, his fourth issue b. 1650 in St. Dunstan’s Parish m. Mary Shaugh (Shaw) from Ireland in 1685 in Maryland. He migrated to the colonies in 1678. They had seven children in Maryland. The sixth was Henry Hill.

Henry Hill ( the sixth child). b. 5-1693. m. Ann Truman in 1724 in Maryland, Died 2-9-1773 in Frederick, Maryland. They had seven children. The eighth was John Hill.

John Hill, b.1735 in Maryland.m. Elizabeth Buher, b. 1-12-1744. They had ten children. The family moved from Maryland to North Carolina, then to Kentucky, and finally to Ohio. John died 1-6-1803 in Loveland, Ohio. Buried in Clemont Co. Ohio. The ninth was Samuel Hill.

Samuel Hill b. 7-2-1779 in Antietam, Maryland. M. Jane “Jenny” Easton 1-27-1799, in Hamilton Co. Ohio. They had ten children. He was a judge for over 30 years in Clemont Co. Ohio. He died 1-10-1856 in Ohio; their eighth child was Amos Kendall Hill.

Amos Kendall Hill, b. 8-3-1817. m. Sarah Highlands 10-1-1839. They had thirteen children. The seventh was George Mathias Hill. Amos died 1-31-1897 in Nashville, Tn.
